Sylla’s response to industry shifts and helping libraries weigh their options, making the most of open for teaching & learning
Introduction
Earlier this week, Clarivate shared a new strategic direction, stating it will “phase out one-time perpetual purchases of digital collections, print and digital books for libraries.”
This decision carries broad consequences for the sector, libraries, and their operations. At a time when many face budget pressures, we question whether shifting entirely to access models and expanding content agreements is the right path forward.
Supporting libraries
Here’s how we support libraries now:
- Sylla can show how open materials align with your reading lists and help you evaluate pathways toward open resources
- We provide no-cost, scalable reading list or course analysis to identify, evaluate, and integrate open alternatives and simplify local adoption
Libraries curious about leveraging open educational resources (OER) and open access (OA) for teaching and learning goals are welcome to contact us
Maximizing open content
Sylla envisions a future where high-quality open materials—including scholarly works, textbooks, videos, and more—are broadly accessible. Where libraries and educators can easily discover, evaluate, and integrate these resources to meet local teaching and learning needs. Many are already contributing to this vision, and while hurdles remain, meaningful progress is possible today. By lowering the barriers that often slow adoption of OA and OER, we can accelerate impact.
Creating a stronger future
With technology advancing rapidly, we have an opportunity to shape a future where open education at scale and personalized learning coexist. One in which libraries and educators are central, and their teaching and learning needs are fully supported.
